Supporting Teens Through Tough Times

Teen Counselling

Is your teenager exhibiting signs of distress such as increased isolation, changes in behavior, or declining academic performance? While challenging boundaries, sassiness, or refusing to spend time with family can be normal teenage behaviours, if these behaviours are paired with sadness, changes in eating or sleeping patterns, or withdrawing from social activities altogether, your teenager may be struggling emotionally. Here are some common signs that signal your teenager needs support:

Angry Outbursts

Frequent angry outbursts, fighting with family members or friends, and oppositional behaviour may indicate an underlying issue like depression or anxiety.

Social Withdrawal

Teens who pull away from friends, family, and activities they used to enjoy may be socially withdrawing as a means to cope with greater life or mental health issues.

Reckless Behaviour

Reckless behaviours like excessive spending, substance abuse, unsafe sexual activity, or dangerous thrill-seeking behaviour can be a sign of emotional distress.

Dropping Grades

A sudden decline in academic performance may be due to depression, anxiety, bullying, trauma or other unidentified problems such as a learning disability.

Persistent Sadness

Teenagers who are feeling persistently down, hopeless, tearful or sad for more than two weeks may be showing signs of depression.

Eating & Sleeping

Loss of appetite, overeating, insomnia, or sleeping too much or irregularly may be signs of emotional distress in teens.

Changes in Body Image

Sudden changes in self-image can be concerning. With bullying and social media, teens are more vulnerable to developing body image issues.

Loss of Interests

Lack of interest in activities they used to enjoy, like sports, hobbies, or socializing, may indicate that there is something going on with your teen.

How Counselling Can Benefit Teenagers?

Teenagers face many challenges, from academic pressures and peer dynamics to body image issues and social media influences. Therapy equips teens with essential skills such as resilience, emotional regulation, effective communication, and self-acceptance. By fostering these skills, adolescents can better navigate challenges and develop a stronger sense of self-awareness and confidence.

Common Mental Health Issues in Teenagers

Teenagers may grapple with a range of mental health challenges, including anxiety disorders, low self-esteem, depression, ADHD, body image concerns, bullying, and trauma. Recognizing these issues is crucial for providing appropriate support and intervention to help teens address and manage their mental health needs effectively.

Supporting LGBTQIA+ Individuals

For LGBTQIA+ teenagers navigating issues related to self-acceptance, coming out, gender dysphoria, and coping with discrimination, mental health therapy can provide a safe and supportive space for exploration, healing, and empowerment. Therapy can address a range of challenges faced by LGBTQIA+ individuals, including parent-child conflicts, relationship dynamics, and overcoming the impact of conversion therapy.
